Traditional Leaded Lights & Stained Glass
Construction of Leaded panels
The term “Leaded Glass” refers to the method of assembling pieces of cut glass into panels using strips of lead known as "cames". Lead came as seen in cross section looks like the letter H.
Cames are placed between each piece of glass and soldered to form the joints.
The space between lead and glass is then filled with lead light cement. This gives the panel more strength & makes the panel weatherproof. Assembling panels this way has been used since the Middle Ages.
The lead can last for 100 years before needing replacement.
A more modern technique called flat foil or "Tiffany". In this method copper foil is wrapped around the edge of each piece of glass and soldered together. This is more suitable for lamp and three-dimensional artworks requiring finer detail.
